There are several ideas on the name of "Trabzon".
Rumours include first settlers naming the city "Trapezus" in connection with large socks found in arable lands in the trapezi form and the colonist calling it "Table Land" since it was situated on a terrace shaped as atable or naming the city "Trapesus" because of the trapezoid city walls and then converted into Trabzon.
Another rumour is that immigrants from Trapesos called roman historian Melave Tacitus uses the words "glorious" and "famous" when talking about Trabzon and this also indicate that Trabzon was a city as famous as and as ancient as Rome.
